First Presbyterian Preparatory School was established in 1964 as a service to our church families and those in the surrounding community. It began as a preschool program with an initial enrollment of forty children. With a growing enrollment, the need for an elementary division became apparent and was added in 1973. Today the preschool and elementary divisions combined are home to over one hundred fifty students.
In mid-1990 with the reconfiguration of the Los Angeles Unified School District, sixth grade was moved to middle school. Many private schools followed this pattern and with the graduating class of 1998, sixth grade had phased itself out at First Pres.
First Pres Prep continues to thrive in its efforts to meet the needs of its students and families. We proudly maintain a strong presence in the community.
First Pres Prep Ministry
First Presbyterian Preparatory School is governed by the First Pres Prep Ministry which reports to the Session of the First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills. The ministry meets monthly, September – July, to discuss the school’s purpose and budget, to establish policies and standards under which the school operates, and to consider educational concerns brought forth by the various stakeholders (parents, faculty and staff, administrators, church members, and students).
The First Pres Ministry is made up of preschool teacher representatives, committee chairs (curriculum, public relations, personnel, finance, and property), a Parent Association liaison, and members-at-large. The Principal and Pastor serve as ex-officio members. Both parent and non-parent constituencies are represented.
First Presbyterian Church of Granada Hills is part of the Presbyterian Church USA.
“Start children off on the way they should go, and even when they are old they will not turn from it.” Proverbs 22:6
