Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The Preschool is accredited by the National Academy for the Education of Young Children and licensed through the Department of Social Services (License #191201784). The Elementary division is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges.

The school is located at 10400 Zelzah Ave, Porter Ranch. It is between Devonshire and Chatsworth Streets, across from Granada Hills Charter High School.

K-2nd grade: 8:30 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

3rd – 5th grade: 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

Elementary Monday Dismissal: 2:00 p.m.

Preschool: 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 noon

Kinder Prep: 9:00 a.m. – 2:30 p.m.

Extended Care: 7:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.


In addition to classrooms, our campus has a state-of-the-art computer lab, a science discovery center, Art Studio, and music room. Lee Hall houses a large auditorium with a full size stage. Outdoor areas include three large yards with swings and climbing equipment, a large grass field, a sand area, basketball courts, volleyball, tetherball, and a blacktop area marked with traditional games.

The preschool curriculum framework is based on The Creative Curriculum and California State Board of Early Learning Standards. We also follow the National Association for the Education of Young Children curriculum goals.

The elementary curriculum framework is based on The California State Standards and Common Core Standards for grades K-5. It is enriched with specialty classes in computer science, music, art, Spanish, Bible, lab science, and physical education.

Starting in 2010, “transitional kindergarten” became the term used to describe the first year of a two-year kindergarten program offered by California public schools to accommodate families who have children turning five between September 2nd and December 2nd. For decades, our full-day kinder-prep programs have offered a structured learning environment for four and five year olds who are ready to hone key kindergarten readiness skills like letter-sound recognition, handwriting, increased attention span, and independent decision making. Children who successfully complete our kinder-prep program are ready for kindergarten!

First Pres Prep is accredited by NAEYC and WASC, maintaining high standards for teacher qualifications, class size, curriculum, health, management and more. Our staff-to-child ratios are no more than 1:10 for preschool and 1:12 for kindergarten.  Public TK programs follow the same standards as LAUSD elementary schools, with a staffing ratio of 1:24 for kindergarten and transitional kindergarten—which may be combined into a single class. At First Pres Prep, parents have ample opportunities to be involved in their children’s education. For families who need extra support, we offer before and after school care as well as enrichment classes, even for our youngest learners. For families who are confused or frustrated by having to enter lotteries and earn points to ensure enrollment at a trustworthy school, we can guarantee a reliable registration process at a fully accredited institution with highly qualified teachers that has proudly served the local community for over 50 years.  

Our small, family-oriented atmosphere encourages open communication between parents and teachers as well as ample opportunities for parents to participate in their children’s education. Our before and after school programs provide the support busy parents need in a community where children thrive.

The accelerated and enriching core curriculum has a STEAM emphasis that can be differentiated based on the needs of individual learners. Our supplemental programs in music, art, Spanish, Bible, and computers offer students opportunities for personal growth, leadership, creative expression, and the skills needed to compete in today’s world—all within a nurturing Christian environment. 

Yes. Lunches must be brought from home Monday-Wednesday and Friday. A pizza fundraiser for fifth grade is held on Thursdays. Snacks are provided for preschool students. Elementary students may bring a snack from home.

Students in kindergarten through fifth grade wear a prescribed uniform. Uniforms are purchased through Dennis Uniform. The Parent Association also sponsors “Gently Used Sales” from time to time. School Spirit items are for sale twice a year and may be worn on Fridays.

Yes. Both preschool and elementary divisions provide after school care for an additional fee until 6:00 p.m. each day. Early morning care is provided from 7:00 a.m., free of charge for elementary students. There is a slight fee for preschool. Enrichment classes are also offered after school at an additional cost. A Homework club meets Tuesday-Thursday after school.

Yes. Parents are partners in our program. The school offers opportunities to volunteer in the classroom, library, and lunch program. Parents also serve as room parents and chaperones on field trips. Our Parent-Teacher Association meets monthly in support of our school. Lifelong friendships are formed at First Pres.

Yes. First Pres offers a limited amount of financial assistance to qualifed families. Applications are requested from the Principal. Granting of financial assistance will be reviewed annually.

We enjoy sharing our amazing program and environment with visitors. Personal tours can be scheduled at any time through the school office or website. We also invite you to join us for our Spring Open House.

Teacher Qualifications

All preschool teachers are fully qualified with either a college degree or numerous units in Childhood Education and years of experience. All Elementary teachers possess a CA teaching credential. Many have advanced degrees. In additional, ongoing education, regular staff meetings and attendance at workshops and conferences are required. When helpful, referrals are made to specialists. First Pres has working relationships with experts to best meet the needs of individual children.
